Diagnosis and treatment
A common misconception that people have is that they can never develop depression because of how settled they are, or how strong their mind is. In reality, anyone can be at risk, regardless of their age, gender, socioeconomic background, or mental strength.
Depending on changes to our physical health and environment, we can be at the risk of developing depression.
A mental health professional will require a medical history and psychological evaluation, to arrive at a diagnosis. They may also conduct blood tests to rule out a medical issue that could be causing the depression.
Depression is as common as having blood pressure issues or high cholesterol. It just means that our body isn’t functioning as it should be. The good news however is that depression is an entirely treatable problem!
Depression can be treated with therapy. In some cases, medication may be prescribed to help a person manage the severity of the symptoms, so they can engage in therapy.
