Be Kind To Yourself
An essential part of self-care is being compassionate towards yourself and patient with your efforts. Often, we may find ourselves using judgemental and harsh language to describe ourselves and our actions. Replacing these phrases with healthier ones can influence your self-image, improving your confidence and self-esteem.
I’m ‘always’ late
why?
Generalizing one incident by using words like ‘always’ and ‘never’ may hinder you from seeing the incidents that are exceptions to these statements.
Try saying this instead
“I was late this time, next time I’ll leave earlier.”
That doesn’t count
why?
If you catch yourself saying this during one of your wins, you’re discounting your own positive qualities. Pat yourself on the back when you can!
Try saying this instead
“I did well this time!”
I messed up. I’m a complete failure
why?
This is known as black and white thinking—when you think in extremes. You either do well or don’t do well and there’s nothing in between. Try to assess what you are doing in a balanced manner.
Try saying this instead
“I didn’t do a good job this time, maybe next time.”
I feel so stupid. I’m such an idiot
why?
You may feel embarrassed by your actions but how you feel isn’t the truth. Try not to label yourself.
Try saying this instead
“My current situation doesn’t define me.”
It may take some time for you to unlearn these thinking patterns that may have become second nature to you. If you observe yourself using these phrases, consciously make an effort to replace them with their healthier counterparts.
